RE: LAUNCHING OF THE YEAR OF THE PONTIFICAL MISSION SOCIETIES
(Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Establishment of PMS in the Philippines (1932-2012)
My dear Reverend Monsignori and Fathers, Religious and Lay Leaders of our Diocese,
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) declared in the July 2011 Plenary Assembly that the year 2012 will be the “Year of the Pontifical Mission Societies.” We are all aware that the four PMS namely: Society for the Propagation of Faith, Society of St. Peter the Apostle, Society of the Holy Childhood, and Missionary Union of the Clergy are “the Pope’s Mission Societies.” They seek to transform “into concrete reality the general commitment to promote the missionary spirit within the heart of the People of God.” (PMS Statutes, 12)
The PMS have been generously serving the local Church in the Philippines since their establishment here in 1932; thus, 2012 commemorates eight decades of uninterrupted dedication to the Church’s mission of evangelization. We are all encouraged then to wholeheartedly respond to nationally initiated PMS Programs as well as local efforts coordinated by Rev. Fr. Ian Retardo, our PMS Diocesan Mission Director.
I invite all of you to join the Diocesan Launching of the Year of the Pontifical Mission Societies at our Immaculate Conception Cathedral on January 14, 2012. Enclosed is the copy of the CBCP Pastoral Letter and the Prayer For Renewal in Mission. Please recite this prayer after Post Communion Prayer in every Sunday celebration of the Holy Eucharist to help us rekindle in our hearts the missionary spirit that God has given us by virtue of the Sacrament of Baptism that we received.
May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Missions and Star of Evangelization help us always in our missionary efforts as a Local Church.
+ REYNALDO G. EVANGELISTA, D.D.
Bishop of Boac
